Main message: Colossians 1 proclaims Jesus as fully God, supreme over all creation and the sustainer and reconciler of everything; therefore he alone is worthy of worship and is the only means of salvation for sinners who repent and believe.

Key points:

• Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God — fully God and fully man, not a created being.
• He is preeminent over creation: everything was created through him and for him, and humans find their true purpose in him.
• By him all things hold together — Jesus is the sustainer and is present with us in suffering.
• He is head of the church and deserves first place in every area of life; commitment to Christ is all-or-nothing.
• Through his blood shed on the cross and his resurrection he reconciles sinners to God; salvation comes by repentance and faith (Romans 10:9).
• Beware false views of salvation (e.g., relying on being a “good person” or merely believing in God without surrender); true conversion results in the indwelling Spirit and new life.
